Vacation

Since Shawn no longer has homework, lab projects, and hours of studying to do he has a lot of extra time with us. We have put that time to good use by exploring the area around us. One weekend this fall we decided to spend the after noon in the city (San Francisco). Our plan was to take the ferry to the wharf and go to the aquarium there. Unfortunately we left the house later than planned and missed the ferry to wharf. We caught the ferry uptown instead and spent the rest of the day exploring the city. The boys still had a great time, they have this wonderful talent of making anything into an adventure. In October Shawn had a few days off to we decided to take our first camping trip. Camping in California is a whole lot different than camping in Wyoming, you are not as isolated, there are no bears to worry about (mountain lions, yes), are you are literally minutes away from civilization. Although it wasn't the same camping experience Shawn and I grew up with it was so much fun. We went on some amazing hikes, the boys got to be up close with nature, and we found something to do that our whole family enjoys. There was a little railroad town close to our campground so we spent one day there riding an antique train up the mountain to a pumpkin patch where the boys got to pick out a pumpkin. After getting off the train we got to eat some delicious chuck wagon BBQ, then it was off for another hike through the Redwoods. California has some truly beautiful forests and I feel so blessed to have the opportunity to enjoy them with my family.

Our camping neighbors had a couple of Great Danes, Hendrik couldn't help himself (Neither could Mom)

Overlooking Santa Cruz
Mick loves to hike, just not in the backpack
Look at those Redwoods (those are the little ones)

The mornings were a little chilly and damp.

A little too much train excitement for Hendrik.
Aleq is a true Iowan and could eat corn with everything

Hendrik prefers the biggest burger he can find

Mick enjoying some roasted marshmallows

That is a Redwood tree behind us, they are lovely and huge.
